DJ/producer talks to Clubz about discovering club music in Frankfurt, his debut compilation and the challenge of creating an artist album
I STARTED going out in Frankfurt in 1998’ / 99’ and got introduced to most of the electronic music that has influenced me over the last ten years through the clubs and DJ’s of the city.
We started going out at U60311 right after the Omen (Sven Väths legendary Club) closed in '98.
Then we started going to clubs like the old Monza and Robert Johnson etc.
The resident DJ’s at these clubs, plus the owners of Freebase Records, the store where I started buying music from around 2001 / 2002, really educated me in electronic music.
The music these guys sold and played just blew me away.
But Frankfurt is not as it was 10 years ago that’s for sure; the nightlife is not as good anymore.
A lot of creative people moved out of the city.
However there are still some young guns, a new generation who are very creative and have great ideas that go beyond trust trying to be a DJ and producing a little bit of music.
They have formed an entire collective of young people who do art, music and events, often all together in one place, which is really exciting.
But that said; Frankfurt is still not as vibrant as it was ten years ago.
Everything has been focused on Berlin during that time.
It’s sad of course, but we try to keep it up here.
This year I was really pleased to release my very first compilation, Arkitekt 01.
Robert Dietz - CD1 Track Clips
It felt right to do it because as it was the first compilation for both the label and myself, there was a completely blank canvas to do whatever I wanted.
With Arkitekt 01, I tried to create two different CDs, each with their own different vibe, as well as to give an insight into the repertoire of the music I play as a DJ.
On the one hand it fits the club environment, but then there is a flip side for different situations like the afterhours, at home in the morning, at work or in the car etc.
When they came up with the project of the compilation I had a huge amount of tracks already in my head.
There were tones of unreleased and not available records that I wanted to use.
It wasn't so easy to get all of them licensed but we managed the majority.
The final mix was then recorded in my studio, as I wanted to have the possibility to edit the music and arrange it in the perfect way.
It took me two and a half months from the first selection of tracks to the final mix and of course I could have easily spent double the time but the deadline pressure made me work much more efficiently in the end.
Altogether I'm really happy with the success of the compilation and I think the hard work paid off.
The reviews have been very cool and I’ve been really pleased with the reaction in general.
As for an artist album, this is a different and more difficult subject.
Of course I have thought about this, it has been on my radar for two years already but I keep pushing plans back and forth in my head.
But I don’t know if I’ll really get to work on it in the next few months, because it needs so much time to get stuck into it properly.
In the immediate future, I’ve got a track of mine featured on the 5 years of Cécille Anniversary compilation which will be out at the end of January.
I will also be working on new EPs for Desolat and Saved, so there is loads more to come from me in 2013.
